Second permanent artificial heart transplant carried out at the Heart and Vascular Centre

Cardiology 2013. December. 13.
The second permanent artificial heart transplant in Hungary has been successfully carried out at Semmelweis University’s Heart Centre, stated Clinic Director Dr. Béla Merkely. The 54-year-old man underwent surgery three weeks ago, and is in such good condition, that he walks several hundred metres a day. The intervention was necessitated by severe heart failure. His condition had been steadily deterioring, relapsing numerous times. The most recent relapse occured two months ago, at which point he was placed on the organ transplant list. However, due to a rare blood type (AB), his doctors decided on an artificial heart transplant instead, which may serve as a permanent solution to his illness.
